In my 2021/22, Bulgaria harvested the second record sunflower crop due to the expansion of the area and obtaining the second record yield. The harvest reached almost 2 million tons.
The reorientation to internal processing of sunflower seeds continued, which exceeded the harvested crop. The increase in domestic processing volumes was due to a decrease in sunflower exports by 11% by 2020/21 mg and an increase in imports to a record level (+54% by 2021/21 MG).
All key sunflower suppliers to Bulgaria have increased shipments, and Ukraine is becoming the first in terms of supply volumes under the influence of the military factor and partial reorientation of the market to export raw materials.
The main market for sunflower seeds remains the EU countries (66% of all exports). China was among the top importers.
Sunflower oil exports are a record (+39% compared to 2020/21 MG). 65% of all exports go to the EU, 16% to South Africa.
India and Iraq were among the top importers, which underlines the role of Bulgaria as a compensator for the decline in supplies from Ukraine.
In my 2022/23, a record sunflower harvest is expected to exceed 2 million tons, which will lead to an increase in the export potential of sunflower and sunflower oil. In addition, high imports are expected, which against the background of active supplies from Ukraine will be at the level of 1 million tons.
